TL;DR
- Use it for the quarterly categories you already spend in.
- Activate each quarter. The $1,500 cap is shared across its bonus categories.
- Not your default card when another card earns more than 1%.
New here? How to read these guides
Start with the earning table and TL;DR. Then check who the card fits, a spending example and how to redeem. Compare the live offer before applying.
- Cash back
- A percentage back on eligible spending. 3% on $100 = $3.
- Points / miles
- 2X means 2 points per $1 spent. It does not automatically mean 2% back. Each program has different redemption values.
- Welcome bonus / SUB
- Extra rewards for meeting an offer's spending requirement by its deadline. SUB means sign-up bonus.
- Churning
- Opening cards for welcome bonuses. Start with one card you can manage, not a pile of applications. Fees, interest and overspending can erase the upside.
- Transfer
- Moving rewards to an airline or hotel program. Often a one-way move.
The first rule: pay your statement balance in full. Interest can wipe out the rewards.
Who this card is for
You can handle one reminder every three months. Activate in Chase, check the category calendar and use Flex where the bonus fits your normal shopping.
What that earns in real life
Illustration: $500 in an eligible 5% category earns $25. The full $1,500 quarterly cap earns $75 at that rate. It is a spending cap, not $1,500 of rewards.
How to use the rewards
For cash back, 100 Chase points = $1. Flex alone does not offer airline or hotel transfers. Combining points with an eligible Sapphire Preferred or Reserve account can unlock that option.
Check the transfer terms and find an available flight first. More points in an airline account do not guarantee a seat.
Before you apply
Quarterly categories change. Check activation dates, excluded merchants and your remaining cap. A store selling groceries does not automatically count as a grocery store.
Compare the live bonus and eligibility rules. Unlimited is simpler for non-category purchases; Flex is useful when its bonus categories match your spending.
Pay your statement balance in full. Interest can cost more than the rewards you earn.

Do I need to activate Freedom Flex categories?
Yes, for the quarterly 5% offer. Check Chase’s category calendar and activate by its deadline.
Freedom Flex or Freedom Unlimited?
Flex is for useful quarterly categories. Unlimited has a higher standard rate on other purchases. Choose based on your normal spending, not the matching names.
