Which card next?

Pick one setup. Here’s the order, the catch, and what to swipe.

The short version

Planning to chase several bonuses? Read this first.

Check Chase before filling your wallet. The community-reported 5/24 rule generally means five or more new personal cards across banks in 24 months can block Chase approvals. It is an informal underwriting rule, not a guarantee either way. How 5/24 works.

Under 5/24 and want several new cards? Consider the Chase cards you want first. Staying below five anyway? Pick the setup that fits your spending. Already at five? Waiting is a valid next step.

Apply one at a time. Check eligibility and finish any bonus using normal spending before considering another card. Don’t rush before a mortgage or other major loan.

This is our simplified wallet guide, informed by r/churning’s June 2025 discussion, still linked in its September 2026 weekly thread. Application order and daily spending are different questions. Community advice is not issuer policy.

Read the arrows as “consider next,” not “apply today.” 3% means $3 per $100. 3X means 3 points per dollar, with no fixed cash value. Each table compares cards within that setup.

Capital One duo

Food on one. Everything else on the other.

$395/yearSavor alone: $0. Full duo before credits.
  1. Capital One Savor credit cardSavorStart with food spending
  2. Capital One Venture X credit cardVenture XAdd when you will use travel benefits

A simple build-up order, not an approval rule. Already ready for Venture X? Check its preapproval first. If Chase is also on your list, read the 5/24 note above before either application.

Why it worksEasy spending split. Savor works as cash back even if you stop at one card.

The catchVenture X costs $395. Its travel credit requires Capital One Travel; it is not cash in your pocket.

How the rewards work together + sources

Keep Savor rewards as cash, or check your account’s Combine Rewards option. Cardholders report moving $1 of Savor cash back into 100 Venture miles. Confirm availability and the conversion shown before relying on it. Then check partner award availability before any airline transfer.

Chase duo → optional trio

Lower annual fee. More categories to remember.

$95/yearSame ongoing fee for the duo or trio, before credits.
  1. Chase Sapphire Preferred credit cardSapphire PreferredStart here if travel-ready
  2. Chase Freedom Unlimited credit cardFreedom UnlimitedAdd everyday spending
  3. Chase Freedom Flex credit cardFreedom FlexAdd rotating categories

If you are not ready for a travel fee, start with Freedom Unlimited instead. If you are pursuing several bonuses and nearing 5/24, prioritize the Chase card you actually want. Neither order guarantees a bonus or approval.

Why it worksBoth Freedom cards have $0 annual fees. Combine their rewards with Sapphire for eligible travel-partner transfers.

The catchIn-store groceries are a weak spot unless Flex happens to cover them that quarter. Preferred’s online-grocery category is different.

How the rewards work together + sources

Chase lets you combine Ultimate Rewards across eligible cards. Move Freedom rewards to Sapphire when you want partner transfers. Check the ratio: Preferred-to-Hyatt is 4:3 for new applicants from June 15, 2026; earlier applicants switch October 1, 2026.

Amex duo + optional business third

Strong food and flight earning. A much bigger fee.

$1,220/yearGold alone: $325. Gold + Platinum before credits; the business third adds no annual fee.
  1. American Express Gold credit cardGoldStart with dining + groceries
  2. American Express Platinum credit cardPlatinumOptional: frequent travel benefits
  3. Business only · optionalBlue Business Plus$0 annual fee. Eligible business purchases, not a required third personal card.

If both fit, check Gold’s welcome-offer terms before opening Platinum. Prior Amex cards can affect bonus eligibility; the exact offer controls. You do not need Platinum just to transfer Gold’s Membership Rewards.

Why it worksGold covers food. Platinum improves direct-flight earning and adds travel benefits for people who use them.

The catchHigh fees and credits with separate rules. The common third card, Blue Business Plus, is a business card, not a personal catch-all.

Gold and Platinum earn Membership Rewards, not Delta or Hilton points. Compare cash prices with partner awards and transfer fees. Never value the whole credit list as cash or transfer speculatively.
