TL;DR
- A simple card for spending that falls outside bonus categories.
- No annual fee. A flat 2% card can still beat its 1.5% base rate.
- Cash back works on its own. Airline transfers need an eligible Chase card.
New here? How to read these guides
Start with the earning table and TL;DR. Then check who the card fits, a spending example and how to redeem. Compare the live offer before applying.
- Cash back
- A percentage back on eligible spending. 3% on $100 = $3.
- Points / miles
- 2X means 2 points per $1 spent. It does not automatically mean 2% back. Each program has different redemption values.
- Welcome bonus / SUB
- Extra rewards for meeting an offer's spending requirement by its deadline. SUB means sign-up bonus.
- Churning
- Opening cards for welcome bonuses. Start with one card you can manage, not a pile of applications. Fees, interest and overspending can erase the upside.
- Transfer
- Moving rewards to an airline or hotel program. Often a one-way move.
The first rule: pay your statement balance in full. Interest can wipe out the rewards.
Who this card is for
You want one easy default card, or you already use Freedom Flex for its quarterly categories. Unlimited earns more on the purchases Flex leaves at 1%.
What that earns in real life
Illustration: $400 on dining earns $12, and $600 on other purchases earns $9. Total: $21 back. The same $600 at 2% would earn $12, so compare what you already own.
How to use the rewards
Chase keeps the balance as points. For cash back, 100 points = $1. You do not need to book travel to get value.
Unlimited alone cannot transfer to airline or hotel partners. An eligible card such as Sapphire Preferred or Reserve can unlock transfers after you combine points. Check the current rules, then find a bookable award before moving them.
Before you apply
Compare the public offer with the referral offer. Check the spending deadline and prior-card eligibility. If you cannot meet a bonus with normal purchases, skip it.
Pay your statement balance in full. Interest can cost more than the rewards you earn.

Do I need both Freedom Flex and Unlimited?
No. Both only help if each improves a meaningful part of your normal spending.
Does the Flex referral link work for Unlimited?
We use the same Freedom referral link for both guides. Select Freedom Unlimited if Chase offers it on the destination page, and confirm the card name before applying.
